Frequently asked questions

Who are you?

My name is Marco and my family is the Goomes and Spencer family from Rakiura/Stewart Island. I have spent the last 10 years researching Rakiura history and whakapapa. I have completed several trees for local and mainland families.

What services do you offer?

Currently I offer my services to create large, digital, printable family trees of Rakiura whakapapa and families. These trees show your connection to various notable tipuna. I may also be able to create these for other southern iwi, send me a message if you are unsure.

How much does it cost?

Pricing varies depending on the amount of research required. Generally I will be able to link you up with the main database if I am provided with some detailed information on your ancestors (don't worry if you do not have extensive records, just send me what you do have). As a baseline I charge anywhere from $600 NZD and upwards for the simplest, most straight forward trees.

There is an additional cost for printed copies of the trees.

Do you offer services other than for Rakiura?

My database does cover other iwi, however, I have the highest likelihood of success with Ngai Tahu, Kati Mamoe, Rapuwai and Waitaha whakapapa. If you are from these iwi, I may be able to help.

How can I contact you?

Please use the contact page to send me an email. I am also available for in person meetings if you are planning on traveling to the island.

What do the trees look like? How far do they go back?

The completed trees are done in a special charting program. They are laid out in an easy to read format and generally include several most notable tipuna. The trees show your connection to these ancestors. Most often I can connect you up with multiple original voyaging waka personalities. The database does however go further back.

The trees are usually printed on A0 paper which is about the same size as a medium sized table.

How long does it take to make the tree?

I cannot give a definite answer as this will depend on several factors but generally I try to produce a tree within a couple of weeks if everything is straight forward.
